Make sure your e-mail box is well protected by an anti-spam filter. Consider installing an efficient and regularly updated anti-spam solution.
If you have a doubt concerning the sender or the subject of an e-mail, do not open or answer it, under any circumstances! If you yet opened it, pay attention to the "unsubscribe" link usually existing on these types of dubious e-mails. Spammers indeed divert the use of this type of link and use it to confirm whether the spammed e-mail address is actually active or not. As a result, your e- mail address will be likely to receive even more spam.
Never buy a product sold through spam. Beware of highly attractive prices. These products are usually fakes and these types of sales are obviously illegal.
Create several e-mail addresses. Keep one for your private life and others for leisure (newsletter, social networks, forums…)
Your personal e-mail address must be difficult to find. Spammers use techniques of names, words and numbers combinations to figure out existing addresses. Your personal email address must therefore not be composed of your surname and last name only. Be creative and personalize your e-mail address.
In the event that you need to communicate your personal e-mail address on the internet, do it in a masked way so that you do not catch spammers' attention. To do so, instead of writing John.Harry@hotmail.com, rather write JohndotHarryathotmaildotcom. If your e-mail address must be visible on the internet, do it via a graphical shape (an image for example) rather than a clickable link.
Your secondary address (for marketing ads/offers, newsletters…) must be temporary. Change it regularly as it is very likely that spammers succeed in getting hold of it.
Phishing frauds are developing massively and become more and more difficult to detect. Never answer to an e-mail asking you for personal data if you have doubts about the sender. Similarly, never share your banking details or passwords by e-mail with anyone.
Keep images display inactive by default settings within your messaging software. Indeed, spammers also use this technique via a « pixel spy » to check if your e-mail address is valid or not.
Finally and above all, use common sense! Many unwanted messages (spams, phishing or scam attempts…) can be easily detected: these are often unconvincing, your e-mail address is not in the « to: » field, the content is full of mistakes and misspellings and is often absurd.
